Digitalization is a term used when implementing digital technology into every aspect of life. Our education is definitely one of the more important parts of our lives, but it’s kind of fallen back behind today’s dynamic ways of living. Digitalization is nowhere to be seen in some cases, and in other it’s limited. The exceptions worldwide are rare, and a small bunch are trying to make a difference in what our youth accumulates going to school or university. Most of the cases that small bunch are students who feel they are victims of today’s education, and the traditional methods of learning. People can’t stand it anymore, but the good thing is that it doesn’t matter anymore. We have developed very unique ways to educate ourselves using Digital Technology, and it’s starting to make a difference.

We will give you a few examples of what is education in the Digital Era.

Nowadays the traditional educational systems around the globe, are far from relevant. In developed countries, traditional education has begun it’s Digitalization a decade ago, but in the less developed regions the picture is not quite the same. In some cases you’ve got people born in WW II, educating young minds born in an era where technology dictates our lives. Back then you couldn’t learn how to play the guitar through online courses, nor to study at home from your desk alone, using some device. Teachers were the key source,  when it comes to obtaining information and their craft was not widely spread. In present times you can break that annoying system by using a variety of methods

  • Online Courses

Using online courses, you can develop almost any skill you can think of and learn any language you choose. A lot of different platforms out there provide you with high quality content on a subject of your choice, bending traditional learning & teaching methods. Although, you need to be careful when you spend funds on online courses. Use only certified platforms and try out a few free courses before buying one. Universities, schools & colleges also  implement online courses, exams and quizzes. This allows them to connect their students from the entire world in one platform, It’s way more efficient than flying thousands of miles away and if you’re persistent you can go a long way using online education.

  • Digital Textbooks

Digital textbooks, known also as e-texts provide students with an interactive interface in which they can find different multimedia content. Pictures, statistics, videos, software etc. They are liked by most students, because they are more used to writing, reading, interacting and working using a digital device like a computer, tablet or their phone. It’s a simple solution with a lot of value to it, plus you save a lot of trees by putting all the materials in the cloud and accessing it by a device, you simply need to be optimal in the Digital Age.

  • Animation

Animated lessons are very captivating and are a different approach to the way we receive information. Studies show that they boost learning efficiency and it is quite logical. Using animated videoclips makes people more creative, as they see what they hear. And when you see what you hear you begin to feel and learn. When you have a complex topic like science or geography animated with attractive content, people see it in a different way, learning becomes very fun. It’s proven that with elementary school students, it’s even more effective because when you think of it today’s kids know the screen better than the book. And you can actually put the information from the book in a digital format so it’s easier to accumulate by those who relate to the digital technologies from early age.  It’s a great thing becoming big very rapidly specially in the more-developed countries.

  • Mentorship

Mentorship is when the Mentor provides the Mentee with guidance in their personal and professional development. People often misunderstand it with supervision, but it’s quite a different thing. There are various mentorship programs, seminars even online mentorship. The world is filling up with more and more successful people, sharing their knowledge trough mentorship offering young minds a filed where they can take action in developing their skills. It’s a good method to obtain what you want with ease, but it also comes at a price and you can’t just get mentored by a successful businessman, artist or whatever. Most of the times you need to pay a price, go through selection and have a portfolio although as mentioned, it’s becoming more and more wide-spread as time goes, and online mentorship can sometimes have very good quality and value for a cheap price as well. So you are limitless when you choose to be a mentee and to use guidance from a lot of successful people.

As you can see, there are ways to digitalize the education process worldwide, and make the world a better place. Nowadays almost anyone can access the internet and get an online course on any subject, sign up for a mentorship program and study online in almost any respected institution. Educational institutions around the world are also implementing digital methods into their students education, and the world is getting to a whole new level.

We asked different students at a different age what they think about digitalization, using simple questions. The students are from Bulgaria, a country that hasn’t quite met digital standards in this perspective.

The question title is “How do you prefer” and there are 3 questions.

  • Writing from the board, or reading from a tablet/computer?
  • Going to school with my books, or a tablet/laptop?
  • Reading from paper books, or using a digital device?

Maria – 8 y.o.

  1. I hate re-writing from the board. If it was written on a computer, I’d pay more attention in class.
  2. If I could have my laptop or tablet with me, it would be cool.
  3. With paper we kill trees, we better use another way.

Pavel – 11y.o.

  1. If everything was on a tablet, it would be 100 times easier.
  2. If I take my laptop to school, the teacher would take it.
  3. I don’t like books, and schoolbooks are boring.

Mihail – 16y.o.

  1. I usually read from my computer, but in school you just have to write novels everyday. Nobody likes it.
  2. Carrying my tablet is better than a 40kg. backpack.
  3. You can find much more interesting info on any subject using internet. With schoolbooks we are just wasting paper.

As we can see, the young generation definitely isn’t ok with the school system not-being digitalized. It’s something that we need to fix, because the whole idea of today’s education is senseless. We are educating our kids on a ton of subjects, yet we never teach them how to use money, how to build businesses and how to lead others. We teach them to become simple employees and hope for the best. It’s not a solution it’s a massacre of knowledge and the children themselves. There are hundreds of millions of people around the world that are feeling the pain of being educated by an outdated system. They graduate, and they don’t want to go to university because they don’t know in what they are interested, nor how to find their interest. They just know, go to work, go home and sleep with 2 days off per week, and the bad part is they cannot change it today.

Negative side:

People today say that It’s bad to digitalize our lives, because we will forget how we live. Well…Isn’t that needed?

The most widely-spread cliché is that “Kids will stop playing outside from these computers”. Yes kids will start spending more time on their computers studying if schools switch to digital-methods of learning and teaching, but they are already spending a great portion of their time on the computer playing games. So it will be more like a refresh in the processes they do on a computer, than a time-wasting thing. We have long passed the times where a kid is overexcited when he has his first digital device, today they are born with the phone next to them, they were first seen on a computer screen at the doctor’s office. It’s not like Digitalization hasn’t changed us. So why are we worried? We are worried because it’s a natural process of self-preservation, the older generations feel that their habitat is being “invaded” and they are responding with the most-basic defense mechanism in their brains, “Rejection”. The minute we stop rejecting the positive sides of digitalization, that is the minute we start to prosper in the new Digital Era.

  • People should take advantage of the internet and the vast amounts of information in it.
  • Digital devices are preferred by students, notebooks & paper books are not their first choice, and they absorb information with less difficulty when using a digital device.
  • Online & self-education are more efficient than most educational systems.
  • There are a lot of innovative ideas, that could potentially make the school a better environment, but they are underutilized.
  • Quality education available for everyone, with the ability to pay a reasonable amount of money to obtain it.
  • You should look for alternative methods of education when you want to acquire skills you will actually use in life.
  • People are actually feeling more like victims to the educational system, than they feel like students of an educational institution.

Nevertheless, people are actually more awakened nowadays than they were ever before. This is leading to global changes in the way we view our existence and the ways we receive information. Digitalization is definitely one of the leading factor in the changes that are occurring in front of our eyes, that’s why we should embrace the changes provoked by Digitalization and develop the New Era ourselves. People struggle to take action, and this leads to misperception when understanding the new methods of teaching and learning. Taking action is something that is mandatory when it comes to success, no matter if it’s in personal plan, education or work, you cannot achieve anything without taking action yourself.

You cannot score a goal when you are sitting on the bench. To do so, you have to dress up and enter the game.
